South Luangwa Photo Safari 22 - 27 June 2017

Tour Dates

Nestled deep within the rift valley of Zambia lies a reserve that combines some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa in a setting as unique as its wildlife is diverse. South Luangwa, with the Muchinga escarpment on its western border and the Luangwa River to the east is a reserve that conjures up scenes of classic Africa.

The South Luangwa Photo Safari runs back to back with the Mana Pools Photo Workshop 28 June - 3 July 2017

The open forest floors allows for clear photography, whilst the huge stands of African ebony trees provide the perfect backdrop to the stunning scenes that you will witness and the Luangwa River meanders along, filled with and attracting all manner of wildlife.

Here you will spend 5 nights in the luxurious Kaingo Camp inside the actual reserve (Many lodges are outside) overlooking one of the floodplains that make this area so special. South Luangwa has all the romanticism of adventure and exploration from day's gone bye; but today it is the wildlife that's the main attraction- the wildlife and Luangwa River.

Photographic Hides

Kaingo's unique photographic hides are a special feature of this safari. These hides are guaranteed to get you close enough to the wildlife to take a whole host of stunning photos - in complete safety. Kaingo has the following photographic hides to offer:

  • Hippo hide
  • Elephant hide
  • Carmine bee-eater hide
  • Mwamba's last waterhole hide
  • Wild dog lagoon hide
  • A mobile hide

These hides have been used in documentaries for BBC wildlife as well as National Geographic. You can expect excellent action and great photography form them.

C4 Photo Safaris has arranged accommodation at Kaingo camp in the north of the reserve. During the rainy season, the reserve is a veritable marshland of mud and elephant damaged roads- almost impassable. However, during the dry season, the languidly meandering Luangwa river dries up, forming pools of water, ox-bow lakes and dead-end tributaries- and it is these pools of water in the high woodland which produce such stunning wildlife viewing.

South Luangwa hosts large populations of elephants, buffalo, hippopotamus and (Thornycrofts) giraffe. Leopard and Lion are exceptionally well represented- indeed; South Luangwa is touted as having one of the highest densities of leopard in Africa. Birds are also a major attraction in Luangwa- with over 420 species recorded. The highlight of the birding experience here is seeing the various storks and herons flocking to feed on the fish in drying pools- which you can expect to see at this time of year. In all, it provides one of the highlights of African wildlife. With Kyle and Ruth as your private guides and host you can expect to make more than the most of your time here.

Mashatu, Mana Pools, MwambaKaingo South Luangwa

"We have travelled with C4 Photo Safaris and Iconic Images International on 6 occasions in Africa as well as to Antarctica and Iceland. This trip was a Mana Pools Workshop booked with private trips to Mashatu and South Luangwa. As with all of our previous trips this was another amazing adventure designed specifically for keen wildlife photographers. As specialists in this field C4 know exactly what photographers require for a rewarding trip capturing high quality sightings and images. The importance of the right locations at the right time of year coupled with properly equipped vehicles, high quality guides and adequate weight limits for small aircraft transfers cannot be underestimated. We have previously travelled to Mashatu and have an affinity with it for good wildlife sightings coupled with the hides and very friendly Botswanan staff. Mana Pools is an amazing elephant experience to be able to get within metres of wild animals and to see the trust of a mother to allow a young calf to approach us. Walking with a pride of lions is not typically done on safaris and is also very special. Camping with the hippos serenading you to sleep at your front door is memorable. South Luangwa is a great location with excellent sightings of leopards, lions, wild dogs as well as bird life, hippos, elephants. Mwamba, Kaingo have a number of purpose built hides for hippos, elephants, birds and carmine bee eaters. A thoroughly enjoyable location with many great photo opportunities. For anyone wishing to participate in top quality photographic safaris we would have no hesitation in recommending C4 Photo Safaris."
