Wellness Safari 2019

Tour Dates

This is not a conventional safari. But it is a safari that will become convention in the future. On this safari we will combine exploration, adventure, safari life, cycling and swimming, all in the realm of nature. It will be a journey of natural history and adventure as much as a journey of self discovery. Expect to be enthralled, but also to relax and contemplate your position within the context of the environment.

Modern life has led us to expect instant gratification more and more. Immersing ourselves in nature is the perfect way to counteract the pace of daily life, we must be mindful in how we appreciate this time. When we travel we strive to open all our senses to the wilderness that surrounds us and and ways to reconnect and be inspired by nature. Leave behind expectations of the “big five  or witnessing a kill and turn instead to the complex beauty of the ecosystem as a whole. It’s time to challenge the traditional “safari” concept and realise that remembering our love for the natural world is the only way to help our planet. And our species. Africa’s power is how enchantingly raw she is and the way she steals your heart and inspires your soul, if you let her.

This safari is based on these exact principles. It is a journey through southern Africa’s most enchanting locations, showcasing places that are often seen, not very well experienced. The vast, open landscapes of Mashatu with its dry riverbeds lined with massive trees is where this adventure starts. Here we will experience true wilderness in an unfenced part of Botswana that houses amazing wildlife amongst some spectacular landscapes. Mashatu compliments our next destination beautifully and takes us to the southern coastal region, known for its beauty, lushness and solitude. Based in the hamlet of Wilderness, we will explore the tranquil lakes, hidden treasures along the beaches and the magnificent forests it has to offer.

What can you expect?

In Mashatu, beyond the normal safari drives, we will be visiting underground hides to get a unique perspective on life around a waterhole. Imagine having a 4 tonne elephant drinking water right above you, the sounds of their stomachs rumbling almost right through you. We will also cycle through this wilderness- giving you a chance to be exposed to the rawness of nature and have the exhilaration riding past elephants and other wildlife. One night we will stay out in a fly camp where we will sleep under two huge Mashatu trees. From here we will have a walking guide to some of the most beautiful and dramatic viewpoints in the region- ending up at one of the most beautiful sunset places in Africa.

The Cape Coast area of Wilderness is filled with forests, ravines and open beaches. In particular, we will visit a rock point at low tide that is seldom visited. Here, at low tide the ocean leaves a gemstone of sea-life in the various rock pools for us to explore and discover. Set in one of the most striking of settings, this is an amazing day immersed in nature. We will also visit a ravine in the forests which is filled with Pepsi coloured water. From the opening of the ravine, we will explore in wetsuits its inner depths until the point where it becomes a slot canyon, with the walls towering 50 meters above us, yet two meters wide. This awe inspiring mini-exploration is one of the most beautiful places in the country- just not many people know about it.  All the while through this journey, you will be guided by experts in their respective fields. Hannah and Shem will ensure each activity touches on our guiding principles of a safari that lets you touch nature, but also is founded in wellness. (please see the fitness section below)

Wellness in the wild is always an expedition, but not in the way you are probably thinking. It’s an expedition into the wild to rediscover ourselves and our place in nature. We will have the opportunity to practice yoga and meditation along our journey to fully immerse ourselves in this journey.

Along it you will have the time to observe, enjoy and become aware of what a true wellness safari is about.

Fitness required

Whilst some of the activities described seem like you need to be very fit, we recommend that you are of average fitness on this trip and are able to:

  • Walk 5km along a flat beach at low tide over the course of a day.
  •  Swim relaxedly in a buoyant wetsuit for 30 minutes.
  • Mountain bike at an easy pace over moderate terrain for 2-3 hours.
  • If you are able to do these activities, then we encourage you to join us, as this safari is one for you.

Kgotla - A night under the stars
Kgotla in Botswana is a tribal court and meeting place. Each village throughout the whole country has one. It is where matters are discussed and meetings are held. As well as being a tribal meeting place, the whole area is alive with history. Cultural signs of the Mapungubwe society litter the hillsides where Jameson, Rhodes and Selous all made their presence felt in this part of Africa. Walking through the small valleys and hills you can almost feel the history, never mind seeing it in the artefacts littered on the ground.

In the shadow of the most beautiful rock cliffs along the banks of the Limpopo River is Mashatu’s own, real Kgotla, now used as a wilderness camp. It is built from leadwood poles in the sandstone formations of the Limpopo basin and is equipped with running water ablutions and hot showers. You will sleep out under the stars at the Kgotla- a real adventure, but with the luxury of a cooked three-course meal, within the protection of your wooden fence and the comfort of hot water showers and flushing ablutions.

The camp is surrounded by eroded sandstone hills that provide world-class landscapes with the numerous baobabs making for stunning subjects. Two spots; Eagles view and Rhodes’ baobab are truly spectacular and make for spectacular scenes.  While we are at the Kgotla we have exclusive access to the whole area with a dedicated walking guide.. This part of Africa is very seldom visited and now you have the opportunity to enjoy it to yourself and capture the magic of the area yourself.

Mashatu, “Land of Giants” takes its name from the locally-sacrosanct Mashatu tree and the giants that roam the terrain. As one of the largest private game reserve in southern Africa, Mashatu is, at 25 000 ha (75 000 acres), a fitting setting for the world’s largest land mammal (the elephant) - with the largest herds on privately owned land on earth. Mashatu also provides sanctuary to the world’s tallest mammal (the giraffe); the world’s largest antelope (the eland); the world’s largest bird (the ostrich) and of course, the world’s heaviest flying bird (the kori bustard). Add the lion, the king of the beasts and the iconic baobab - and you have Africa’s Big Seven.

New Conservation Levy at Mashatu Game Reserve

Most areas in Africa, which are earmarked for the conservation of wildlife and natural environment, are realising the increasing necessity for ecological preservation and support of the communities who live on the periphery of these areas. In addition to the major contribution, which the custodians of these sanctuaries make, they garner additional support from guests who enjoy these areas. This is done by way of charging the guests a daily levy, which is earmarked for conservation, anti-poaching and the communities.

With effect from the 1st of January 2019, all reservations at Mashatu, irrespective of the nature, will attract a conservation levy of $10 per person per night. This conservation levy will be included in all reservation pro-forma invoices for settlement prior to arrival at the respective camps within the reserve. For standing reservations made post the 1st of January 2019, these will be amended to include the levy.
