There are few places in Africa that can be describes as being “Raw wilderness”. From the moment you touch down in Mana Pools you sense that something about the area is different. Perhaps it is the open floodplains with massive trees dotted amongst them, or perhaps it is the elephants rambling amongst them, sometimes lifting high on their hind legs to reach the branches. Perhaps it is the campsite, situated on the banks of the Zambezi River with no one else about. Perhaps it is the elephants that come and feed in the tree above you as you are having your lunch. Whichever one of these it may be, Mana pools instantly touches something within you and makes you realise that you are in a different wilderness altogether.
The first realisation of the actual “raw” sensation comes when you head out on a drive and within minutes of sighting an animal you get out your vehicle and walk towards it. This brings a completely different sensation to your photography and your experience. Being within a few meters of a large elephant bull as it feeds quietly above you is one you will never forget. I have watched people put down their cameras to enjoy the experience of such a scene, humbled by being within their presence.
On this photo workshop you will have a registered walking guide, Humphrey Gumpo. He has many thousands of hours working in the reserve and has worked with C4 on many Mana Pools safaris and each one was an indication of how excellent a naturalist he is and how well he knows the Mana Pools National Park.
André grew up in the African bush with literally one hand on his binoculars and the other hand on the camera. An avid birdwatcher at that young age, he was given his first SLR in 1990. The passion of birding turned into one of photography and in 2004 Andre co-founded C4 Photo Safaris with Shem Compion.View Profile >
Humphrey is a Specialist photography private guide living and working in Zimbabwe. He operates through the whole country but has a special affinity for Mana Pools, in which he has been leading tours for 10 years. He has international clients that travel with him each year- an indication of his expertise and temperament. In this time he has got to know Mana Pools and the animals intimately.View Profile >
