Tribes of Northern Kenya 2020

TOUR DETAILS
TOUR DATES

This exclusive, small group tour provides a rare opportunity to photograph  “some of the most remote Northern Kenyan cultures”, WITH THE MOST EFFICIENT TRAVEL ITINERARY POSSIBLE. Please contact us for the pricing and dates for 2021 on minette@c4photosafaris.com

In the far flung reaches of northern Kenya lies a very remarkable land. It is dry, it can be hot and there will be dust, but also there is great beauty. The Mathews range of mountains and the Chalbi desert are amazing spectacles in their own right, but the real highlight is the Jade Sea – Lake Turkana. This beautiful lake is the hub of the region that hosts a lot more life than at first meets the eye. And it is this life we will be seeking.

Colour abounds with the tribes in northern Kenya, with some being the most colourful in Africa. Many people think only of the Samburu when thinking of northern Kenya. They are certainly the most striking in the region, but we will also be visiting and interacting with Rendille, the Turkana, the Gabbra and potentially others.

This safari is a full immersion into the tribes of northern Kenya. It is not like travelling to other culturally rich areas in Africa where tourism is established. There is no tourism here. Consider that on an 8-day safari in 2019, we did not see one other tourist. This safari is about authentic tribes in an authentic environment where the journey is an adventure and the photography is unique, and unrivalled.

We will be staying in exclusive mobile camps set up for our purpose and we will be travelling far into each location to be as authentically immersed in each environment as possible. In addition to this, a cultural expert will be joining us for the trip to share her knowledge and experience of this region with us. Hilary Hurt has vast experience and intimate knowledge on a personal level but also an academic one of the region and its Tribes. Her knowledge will be invaluable to us interconnecting with the tribes we visit.

This is a safari that goes beyond the norm. It is unequivocally the most thorough traverse of the northern Kenyan tribes and the landscape they live in. This safari will be about exploring, interacting with your subjects and importantly, about acquiring images that are beyond the norm. For in such places such as deserts, the drier the environment, the more colourful and creative the riposte.

To maintain the integrity of our visit, we accept no more then 4 clients on each safari.

Shem Compion has been photographing African culture for the past 15 years and has grown a special affinity for African Tribes, where he finds being in the remote areas stimulates people’s creativity and allows them to express themselves naturally: creating wonderful connections with the people and then making magic as photographers. Shem’s gentle approach combined with his technical expertise will guide you in taking some of the most amazing images of culture you have ever taken.

Come and join Shem in northern Kenya on this incredible safari. It will be a journey of a lifetime with lots of adventure and images to last a lifetime.

Soames Hotel

Soames Hotel and Jacks Bar is a beautiful hotel and restaurant, located 7km from Nanyuki town on the Nanyuki Naro-Moru highway. Opening in 2015 to meet a need for a stylish, small and personal hotel in the Nanyuki region of northern Kenya.

Soames is a classic contemporary style hotel, with a clean-cut modern look, simply and tastefully furnished. Located just a few kilometer out of Nanyuki town, Soames is set within a 100-acre private property – surrounded by grassy fields with uninterrupted views of Mount Kenya that lies on the horizon and reminds us why its Kenya’s highest and most impressive mountain.

Soames Hotel has 12 garden rooms (within 6 separate cottages) and each room has double or twin bed configuration. Rooms are furnished with pure cotton linen and tastefully styled with natural colours and simple furnishings.  Each room has a flat screen TV with many DSTV channels. The en-suite bathroom facility has a hot power shower. All rooms have tea and coffee facilities.

Outside each room is a deck, which is an ideal space to relax and enjoy the garden, and the sunrise views of Mount Kenya that dominates the horizon.

Koros Camp

Set on the 250,000-acre Ol Donyo Mara Conservancy, Koros is the inspired creation of a Nairobi family who have been involved for many years with the nearby Lake Turkana Wind Power Project. What started off as a basic weekend retreat became, over time, a comfortable and well-equipped base for family holidays. And now they have decided to share this wonderfully original and much-loved retreat with visitors to the area.

Bedroom accommodation at the camp consists of five safari tents, each of which can be configured either with twin beds or a double bed – sleeping a total of ten guests. Hot showers are alfresco, along with lavatories in the separate bathroom block.

The Mess, the camp’s main living and dining area, is comfortably furnished with dining table and chairs and built-in sofa seats. There is a small and well-equipped kitchen behind the Mess which has its own gas stove, from where David the chef conjures up a range of delicious meals. For keen grillers there is a BBQ inside the Mess where guests can cook while socialising.
