This safari is well suited to guests interested in rainforest photography, behavioural wildlife work, birding, and quieter, more considered time in the field within a small group environment.
Fitness Level: Moderate.
Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking takes place in dense rainforest, often across uneven ground, muddy trails, and variable gradients. A reasonable level of fitness will help you enjoy the experience fully. Game drives, boat excursions, and wetland activities are all conducted at a slower pace from stable vehicles and boats.
The C4 Experience: Mist hangs low over the forest edge as the trackers pause ahead of you, listening for movement somewhere beyond the vines. In Uganda, photography often begins long before the camera is raised. This itinerary has been designed to give you time in the field with both mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, with multiple trekking opportunities allowing space to slow down, adapt to conditions, and work patiently with changing light and behaviour.
Led by Darren Donovan, the safari combines the forests of Kibale and Bwindi with the open plains of Ishasha and the waterways of the Kazinga Channel and Mabamba Swamp. Along the way, you will photograph everything from fast-moving chimpanzees in the canopy to tree-climbing lions, river wildlife, crater lake landscapes, and some of East Africa’s most sought-after bird species, including the Shoebill stork.
Travelling with only four guests allows flexibility during treks and game drives, while also creating space for dedicated photographic guidance throughout the journey. Accommodation has been selected for proximity to key wildlife areas and trekking access points, reducing unnecessary transfer time and maximising your time in the field. Domestic flights, permits, conservation fees, and logistics are arranged in advance so you can remain focused on the experience itself.

Uganda holds an unusual concentration of habitats within a relatively compact landscape. Rainforest, wetland, crater lakes, savanna, and river systems all connect across the country, creating exceptional diversity for both wildlife and photography.
This twelve-day safari follows that transition through the forests of Kibale and Bwindi, the remote plains of Ishasha, and the papyrus wetlands bordering Lake Victoria. The journey is built around time with two of Africa’s most iconic primates: mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, while also exploring the broader ecosystems that support them.
