Returning Rhinos to the Wild

Some conservation projects unfold quietly. Others have the potential to reshape the future of an entire species.

African Parks has committed to rewilding 2,000 rhinos across Africa within a decade. The animals are being prepared for relocation to well-managed protected areas where they can once again contribute to wild ecosystems.

This private photographic experience takes you behind the scenes of that work. You will spend two or three nights at the project site, photographing the rhinos and learning about the care, planning and coordination required to undertake a conservation operation of this scale.

Inside the Project

This is not a staged visitor experience. You step into the daily rhythm of a working conservation project, with each day shaped by what is happening on the ground.

Mornings may begin with the rhino roll call as the team checks the animals across the property. You may observe feeding operations and visit the nursery where orphaned calves are cared for.

Under professional supervision, there are opportunities to photograph rhinos on foot in the open grassland. Game drives, aerial photography, drone photography and after-dark sessions from an underground hide offer further ways to document the rhinos, the landscape and the wider conservation story.

Join the morning rhino roll call and observe the feeding, care and monitoring that form part of life on the project.

• The Rhino Nursery

Spend time with orphaned calves being cared for before they are ready to return to the wild. This will depend on the age and care requirements of the calves at the time of your visit.

• Aerial Photography

Photograph the property and its wildlife from the air during a doors-off helicopter flight.

• Underground Hide

Use the underground hide and its lighting system to photograph rhinos and other wildlife after dark.

• Conservation Storytelling

Work with Mike Dexter to create a photographic story that documents the animals, the people and the purpose behind the project.

Mike Dexter is a wildlife and conservation photographer and specialist photographic guide with more than a decade of experience across Africa.

With a background in photojournalism and professional field guiding, Mike understands how to build a photographic story rather than simply collect individual images. He will help you document the rhinos, the people working with them and the conservation process taking place around you.

Mike knows the project site, its team and its daily operations. His relationship with the project allows guests to enter the experience with insight and respect, while his patient approach supports photographers of every level.

Available Only While the Work Continues

The rewilding of 2,000 rhinos creates a rare but temporary opportunity.

Over the coming years, the animals will be relocated from the project site to protected areas across Africa. Once this work has been completed, the experience will no longer exist in its current form.

Access to the project is intentionally limited, allowing guests to experience the work with insight and respect while the rhinos are prepared for their return to protected landscapes.

The experience is available throughout 2026 and can be booked as a two or three-night stay. Return road transfers from OR Tambo International Airport are included, making it possible to add the experience to a wider South African or African safari.

Your stay includes accommodation, meals, selected beverages, private transfers, specialist photographic guidance and the scheduled conservation and photographic activities taking place during your visit.

A 30% deposit confirms your booking. The balance is payable eight weeks before arrival.
